Virginia Tech PhD student wins $10,000 and the first-ever title of Miss Virginia Volunteer.
Breana Turner makes history as the first Miss Virginia Volunteer
LYNCHBURG VIRGINIA (August 17, 2021) — This weekend Breana Turner was crowned the winner of the first-ever Miss Virginia Volunteer pageant, a statewide scholarship pageant program. The 24-year-old from Northern Virginia won $10,000 in scholarship funds, and she earned the use of an apartment and vehicle for her year of service. Breana holds a master’s degree in public health from Virginia Tech, where she is currently working on her PhD in Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health.
Over the last five years, Breana established her own mentoring program, Sisters with Ambition, where she enriches the lives of middle and high-school-age girls through educational workshops and activities. During her reign as Miss Virginia Volunteer, she will continue to advocate for the empowerment of women through her platform focusing on women’s health.
Breana will go on to compete at the national competition, Miss Volunteer America, in May 2022.

Miss Virginia Volunteer Finals Night at the Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg, VA: Inaugural Statewide Scholarship Pageant
New pageant production promises to continue the legacy of traditional pageants while bringing a modern energy to the stage.
On August 14, 2021, Miss Virginia Volunteer will host its first ever live pageant event at the Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg, VA. Pageant contestants will compete in four categories of scoring: Interview (40% score value), Talent (20%), Evening Gown (20%), and Fitness & Wellness (20%). The winner will receive $10,000 in scholarship funds towards education and she will represent her state at the national Miss Volunteer America pageant.
The Academy Center of the Arts campus, which encompasses several venues in downtown Lynchburg, is anchored by the Historic Academy of Music Theatre. Originally built in 1905, the 835-seat theatre recently underwent major renovations and updated to state-of-the-art technology— all while preserving the vintage aesthetic that makes this venue a local favorite.
MEET THE CONTESTANTS
Each contestant has advocated for their chosen social platform since being selected as Miss Virginia Volunteer representatives, highlighting the organization’s focus on promoting volunteerism and social impact. The eight contestants are vying for the chance to promote their platform across the state as they serve for a year as the newly crowned Miss Virginia Volunteer. The contestants for the inaugural year are as follows:
Miss Virginia Volunteer Organization states their mission is to educate and empower young women across Virginia through workshops, seminars, scholarships, volunteerism, and pageants. These women in return will be able to go out and lead others to accomplish the organization’s guiding principles, to S.E.R.V.E — Scholarship, Education, Responsibility, Volunteerism, and Empowerment. More than a competition, Miss Virginia Volunteer promises to be a community that provides connections, opportunities, and lasting impact for young women in their state.
